CLASSIFICATION:     Churchyard.
LOCATION:                 In the city of Poughkeepsie, on the east side of East Mansion St.
CONDITION:               Good.
INSCRIPTIONS: 108 in number. Copied November 6 and 7, 1914, by J. W. Poucher, M.D.
REMARKS: This yard is the property of St. Peter's Church (Roman Catholic) and was in use from 1841
to 1884. About 1825-1835 emigrants from Ireland became numerous enough in Poughkeepsie to form a
well defined fraction of the population and in 1837 they erected a church building. The burying ground an
East Mansion street, a parochial cemetery, is the resting place of a number of the first generation of Irish
Immigrants to this locality. The inscriptions of the later cemetery, owned by St. Peter's parish, on Salt
Point Road a little northeast of the city of Poughkeepsie, are not included in this work as they fall within
the period of more careful record keeping and are easily accessible.
